Great Rift Valley

Great Rift Valley

Immense geological feature in East Africa, formed over the past 35 million years. This giant split in the landscape is the result of two tectonic plates separating. The Great Rift Valley runs north to south for 5000 km, varies in width from 30-100 km, and is between several hundred to several thousand metres deep at any given point. The first photograph is from the NASA freeware program Worldwind, showing Lake Tanganyika within the Great Rift Valley (7.5 times vertical exaggeration). The second is a photograph within the valley, and the third is a map showing the location of the valley within the African continent.
